ENERGY EFFICIENT GLASS

First thing is to throw out those R value figures that the salesfolks gave you - in real life R value for windows doesn't mean much when dealing with overall performance.

What you want to look at is the U value.

U FACTOR

The rate at which a window, door, or skylight conducts non-solar heat flow. It's usually expressed in units of Btu/hr-ft2-ºF. For windows, skylights, and glass doors, a U-factor may refer to just the glass or glazing alone. But National Fenestration Rating Council U-factor ratings represent the entire window performance, including frame and spacer material. The lower the U-factor, the more energy-efficient the window, door, or skylight.

U Factor Rating
An organization called the National Fenestration Ratings Council (NFRC) has developed a rating system based on the U factor. The U factor is the rating most homeowners look at first and for good reason. This rating measures the heat loss that occurs through the window. Most homeowners choose to install thermal replacement windows because of the heat loss that occurs in the winter with their old windows. Most windows now carry this rating so it's becoming easy to make comparisons. Generally speaking, windows all have a U factor between 1.3 and .2, and the lower the number, the better.

Window Type U Factor Ratings

Old metal casement window 1.3

Good quality singe-pane window 1.0

Good single-pane with storm window .6

Double pane with low-E glass .4 and better

  • Installing, high-performance windows will improve your home's energy performance. While it may take many years for new windows to pay off in energy savings, the benefits of added comfort and improved aesthetics and functionality may make the investment worth it to you. Many window technologies are available that are worth considering.

Efficient windows may have two or more panes of glass, warm-edge spacers between the window panes, improved framing materials, and low-e coating(s), which are microscopically thin coatings that help keep heat inside during the winter and outside during the summer.
